England along with Wales Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Group Pairings

The Irish and the Scots also share a group together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks before the final, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups conclude according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six group winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
